Funding Sources

NAVEL is a worker self-directed non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status, sustained via recurring giving through our Pollinators program, small donations, space rental income, ticket sales, public and private grants, and countless volunteer hours.

Since our launch we have attempted to maintain autonomy in our programming and projects by developing diverse streams of revenue including earned revenue with surplus which can be redistributed towards experimental arts and cultural programs & projects. As part of our commitment towards Fearless Accountability, we are in the process of making our finances, budgets, and labor practices more transparent and accessible. If you have any questions, get in touch at sustainability@navel.la.

Although we have been able to keep our lights on and doors open through pandemic relief support, these funding streams are ending even though the pandemic isn't over. Please consider supporting our work.

Labor Practices: Kinship Economies in Practice

In the face of the pandemic, we focused on investing in care and fostering a supportive environment for our artist-workers, showcasing our commitment to enhancing working conditions within our organization and beyond.

WORKER CARE PRACTICES TO COUNTER DOMINANT CONDITIONS FOR ARTS WORKERS:

  • We maintain a $25-35/hr. wage and contractor pay scale, inclusive of interns.

  • We offer up to $300 as a health insurance stipend for full-time workers.

  • We provide a monthly wellness stipend and professional development funds.

  • We have established flexible vacation, sick leave, and personal day policies.

  • We prioritize rest and self-care for ourselves, our bodies, and each other.

HOW WE INVESTED IN COMMUNITY CARE DURING THE PANDEMIC:

  • Deep, compensated community listening through the Chrysalis collective experiment.

  • Adopted a worker-empowered structure, distributive and decentralized leadership model, and became a worker self-directed non-profit.

  • Provided healing and political education virtual programming to nourish the community during challenging times.

  • Kept our physical space open for free community-based events and gatherings.
